In a symbolic moment for Germany’s energy transition, the 117‑meter‑high cooling tower at the former Frimmersdorf lignite (brown coal) power station in Grevenbroich was successfully demolished with a controlled explosion on 26 February 2026. The tower, part of the now‑decommissioned Block Q of the plant, was brought down as part of the broader dismantling of the site and the country’s ongoing coal phase‑out efforts.
Operated by energy giant RWE Power, the Frimmersdorf power station was one of Europe’s largest lignite‑fired plants before its final shutdown. All units were taken offline years earlier, with complete decommissioning finalized in 2021.
The controlled demolition involved setting up a safety perimeter and temporarily closing nearby access roads. Because the plant sits well away from dense residential areas, local residents were not directly affected.
This was the first major cooling tower to be removed in the Rheinisches Braunkohlerevier — Germany’s largest lignite mining and power generation region — as part of the systematic dismantling of coal infrastructure. The broader site cleanup and redevelopment are expected to continue until mid‑2028.
Officials say the demolition represents both an environmental milestone and a gateway to a new future for the former coal site. Plans include transforming the 70‑hectare area into a digital and innovation hub with office space, technology facilities, and education centers once the teardown is complete.
