The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced a 40‑day period of national mourning following the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at age 86. State media reported that Iranian authorities declared the mourning period along with seven days of public holidays after Khamenei was killed in joint United States–Israeli airstrikes, marking a major escalation in a rapidly intensifying conflict.
Iran’s government described Ayatollah Khamenei as a defining figure who led the country for nearly four decades and praised his role as a religious and political leader. In an official statement, the government said Khamenei’s path and legacy would continue, portraying his death as a “martyrdom” and vowing that his ideals would be pursued with greater determination. The Revolutionary Guard also promised severe retaliation against those responsible.
Across Iran, citizens poured into streets, mosques and public squares to pay respects, with prayers and mourning rituals observed in major cities such as Tehran, Isfahan and Mashhad. Flags were flown at half‑mast and religious leaders called for commemorative ceremonies amid heightened security measures as the nation mourns.
The extended mourning period reflects the deep cultural and religious significance of the number 40 in Shi’a Islam, traditionally observed as a time for remembrance and prayer following the death of a revered figure. Authorities said the mourning would coincide with ongoing national and regional tensions as Iran faces the impacts of the broader military conflict.
