Japan has carried out its first execution since 2022, putting to death Takahiro Shiraishi, infamously known as the Twitter Killer. In 2017, Shiraishi used Twitter to target
people suffering from suicidal thoughts. He lured 9 victims—8 women and 1 man—to his apartment in Zama, near Tokyo, where he sexually assaulted, strangled, and
dismembered them. Their remains were found stored in coolers and toolboxes filled with cat litter. Shiraishi was arrested on October 31, 2017, confessed to all nine
murders, and was sentenced to death in December 2020. He did not appeal the sentence. This case shocked Japan and sparked nationwide debate on social media use,
mental health vulnerability, and capital punishment. Stay tuned to Newsible Asia for the latest global crime and justice updates.
