Tehran, Iran — A powerful airstrike struck Tehran early Thursday, obliterating a major indoor sports arena within the iconic Azadi Indoor Stadium at the Azadi Sport Complex, sending thick clouds of black smoke billowing over the capital.
According to multiple reports, a 12,000‑seat indoor arena was completely destroyed in the airstrike — part of a broader barrage targeting strategic and symbolic infrastructure across Tehran as the ongoing U.S.–Israel military campaign against Iran accelerates.
Eyewitness videos circulating online captured enormous plumes of smoke rising above the western districts of the city shortly after powerful explosions reverberated through residential neighborhoods. The sound of blasts and shaking windows was reported by residents across central Tehran, who described scenes of sudden chaos and fires near the damaged sports facilities.
Iranian state media cited officials and sports authorities condemning the attack. Iran’s Sports and Youth Minister Ahmad Donyamali denounced the strikes on the sports complex as a violation of international law and the Olympic Charter — arguing that sports infrastructure should be protected under wartime humanitarian principles.
The destroyed indoor arena, historically a venue for volleyball, wrestling, futsal and other major national sporting events, has served as a cultural landmark and home ground for Iran’s national teams for decades.
While there has been no immediate official confirmation of casualties, the blast waves reportedly shattered windows in adjacent facilities, including dormitories and a swimming pool within the complex. Iranian sports federation heads also reported damage to buildings linked to other athletic organizations within the site.
The strike comes amid a wider pattern of U.S. and Israeli attacks on key Iranian military, government and infrastructure targets in the capital — reportedly as part of a sustained campaign to weaken Tehran’s missile, intelligence and security capacity. Analysts warn that continued strikes on high‑profile urban sites may further escalate tensions and risk broader regional conflict.
