US Official Paul Kapur Meets BNP Leaders to Discuss Bangladesh Ties

US Official Paul Kapur Meets BNP Leaders to Discuss Bangladesh Ties

Post by : Shakul

Dhaka, Bangladesh — Paul Kapur, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, held a meeting with a delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during his official visit to Dhaka. The discussion took place at the US ambassador’s residence in Gulshan as part of his two-day visit to Bangladesh.

According to BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, the meeting centered on broader bilateral relations rather than party-specific matters. He said the US delegation sought to understand the BNP’s policies and its perspective on Bangladesh’s political and economic future. Discussions reportedly covered diplomatic relations, foreign policy direction, people-to-people engagement, and global developments affecting the region.

Other BNP leaders present at the meeting included Barrister Nawshad Zamir, Dr Mahbubur Rahman, Nayeba Yusuf, and Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury. Moyeen Khan stated that the party emphasized three key areas: strengthening diplomatic relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and ensuring freedom of speech and economic freedom — issues he noted are aligned with US priorities in its global engagements.

The BNP leader clarified that parliamentary or party-specific matters were not discussed during the talks. He also refrained from commenting on remarks by Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman regarding a reported reciprocal trade agreement signed between Bangladesh and the United States with the consent of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Paul Kapur’s visit is part of ongoing US diplomatic engagement in South Asia, reflecting Washington’s continued interest in political stability, democratic governance, economic partnership, and regional cooperation with Bangladesh.
