A dramatic rescue operation in Nepal has brought a major ray of hope after two hydropower workers were found alive inside a tunnel nine days after devastating floods and debris swept through the Trishuli River region. The two workers, Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan, were rescued from the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station after rescuers managed to reach them deep inside the underground tunnel. Their survival has been described as a major breakthrough in the ongoing Nepal tunnel rescue operation. The rescue came after days of uncertainty, as emergency teams continued searching through mud, rocks and debris following the catastrophic flooding that affected several hydropower projects and surrounding communities.
According to reports, Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan were located around 170 metres inside the tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station. The tunnel had been heavily affected by the disaster, making access extremely difficult for rescue personnel. Teams had to work through dangerous and unstable conditions while removing debris and creating a safe path to reach the trapped workers. After nine days underground, both men were eventually brought out alive, providing an emotional moment for their families and the rescue teams who had continued the search despite the difficult circumstances.
The workers became trapped after a devastating disaster struck the Trishuli River valley on August 26. A massive flow of mud, rocks and water affected areas around the river and caused extensive destruction. Several hydropower facilities were among the locations impacted by the disaster. The sudden flooding and debris movement blocked sections of underground infrastructure, leaving workers trapped in tunnels and making rescue operations extremely challenging. The disaster also caused widespread destruction across Nepal, with thousands of people reported dead or missing as rescue and recovery operations continued.
For nine days, rescue teams worked to locate workers believed to be trapped underground. The operation required teams to carefully remove debris while dealing with difficult terrain and the risk of further movement inside the damaged areas. Rescuers could not simply enter the affected tunnel sections because blocked passages and unstable conditions created additional risks. Instead, teams had to proceed carefully while searching for signs of survivors. The successful hydropower tunnel rescue has now strengthened hopes that other missing workers could also be found alive.
The two rescued workers were identified as Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan. Their rescue was particularly significant because they had remained underground for nine days after the disaster. Reports said Sah suffered non-critical injuries, while Maharjan was unable to move his limbs when rescued. Both were taken for medical treatment following their recovery from the tunnel. The condition of the two workers is being monitored by medical teams as authorities assess the physical impact of their prolonged stay underground.
The successful rescue has given fresh hope to families waiting for news about their missing relatives. A large number of workers and other people remain unaccounted for following the disaster. Hydropower projects along the Trishuli River have been among the major areas of concern because several workers may still be trapped inside tunnels. The survival of Sah and Maharjan demonstrates that people can remain alive in isolated sections of damaged infrastructure even after several days, encouraging rescuers to continue searching other underground areas.
Although two workers have been rescued, the overall emergency operation is far from over. Rescue teams are continuing to clear debris and examine tunnels and other damaged areas for signs of people who may still be trapped. The Trishuli River flood caused widespread disruption, and rescue teams face significant challenges because of damaged infrastructure, unstable ground and large quantities of mud and debris. Authorities are therefore maintaining search operations at multiple locations while attempting to reach areas that remain inaccessible.
