Severe thunderstorms and torrential rainfall caused widespread flooding across New York City overnight, leaving several roads underwater and disrupting normal life across multiple boroughs. Areas including Queens and Brooklyn were among the worst affected as the city’s drainage and sewer systems struggled to handle the massive volume of rainwater.
Videos shared on social media showed streets turning into rivers within minutes as vehicles became stranded in deep water. Several cars were partially submerged while traffic movement came to a complete halt in many low-lying areas. Public transport services also faced delays due to waterlogging and poor visibility caused by intense rainfall.
One shocking video from the flooding incident showed a woman being swept away by strong floodwaters shortly after stepping off a bus during the storm. Emergency crews and local authorities rushed to respond as rescue operations were carried out in affected neighbourhoods.
Officials warned residents to avoid flooded streets and unnecessary travel as more rain and thunderstorms remain possible in the region. Authorities stated that the rainfall intensity exceeded what much of the city’s infrastructure was originally designed to manage, resulting in rapid flash flooding across major roads and intersections.
Emergency teams continued overnight operations to clear blocked drains, assist stranded motorists and restore normal traffic movement. Residents were also advised to remain indoors wherever possible and follow weather advisories issued by local agencies.
