Vince Gill received the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award on Wednesday, November 19, at the CMA Awards 2025. Prior to accepting this honour, Brandi Carlile and Patty Loveless delivered a heartfelt tribute with their rendition of Gill’s iconic song “When I Call Your Name.” This award, created in 2012, has previously recognised country legends like Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, and last year's honoree George Strait, who presented the award to Gill during the ceremony.
In his acceptance speech, Gill opened with a humorous remark, claiming he might be the sole recipient of the award who has never smoked weed. He took a moment to honour Willie Nelson, describing him as a friend of five decades and commending his warmth and kindness towards family. He acknowledged the figures who influenced his career, including the CMA team for 12 consecutive years of hosting, the Grand Ole Opry community, and his touring and management personnel, as well as his family. He referenced each of his children, made a joke about his youngest daughter’s guitarist boyfriend, and concluded with a heartfelt mention of his wife, Amy Grant, as the “kindest soul” he has ever known.
Industry figures hailed Gill as a groundbreaking artist whose contributions embody the essence of country music. Across his five-decade career, he has garnered 22 Grammy Awards and a record four CMA Song of the Year titles, alongside prestigious accolades such as the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence in 2014 and the CMA Foundation Humanitarian Award in 2017. Gill is a member of both the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame and boasts a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 2025, Gill marked 50 years in music with the launch of a new EP series titled 50 Years from Home. The first release, I Gave You Everything I Had, debuted on October 17. With this recognition, Gill joins a revered group of country icons whose legacies continue to influence the genre.
