The United States is grappling with its third major winter storm in just one week, set to rapidly evolve into a bomb cyclone by Tuesday. This powerful storm is anticipated to blanket northeastern states and New England with heavy snow, resulting in perilous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
As December progresses, snow is already covering over a third of the nation, marking a notable beginning for the meteorological winter season. Reports indicate that such extensive snow coverage on December 1 hasn’t been seen since 2019, a year when roughly 41% of the U.S. was under snow.
Weather alerts have been issued across 27 states, spanning a distance of 1,500 miles. Some northeastern states have put out winter storm warnings, while others, from Montana to Maine, are advising caution through winter weather advisories. Officials are urging the public to stay informed about local forecasts and to limit travel whenever possible.
A bomb cyclone occurs when a storm undergoes rapid intensification, with a significant drop in atmospheric pressure occurring within a brief timeframe, typically less than 24 hours. To classify as such, the atmospheric pressure must decrease by at least 24 millibars in one day, a phenomenon referred to as “bombogenesis.” Current predictions suggest the storm's pressure could decrease between 27 to 29 millibars from Tuesday to Wednesday, indicating a strong and swiftly evolving system.
Snowfall statistics reflect considerable accumulation in certain regions. The Rockies in Southwest Colorado have seen 14 inches of snow, while Kansas City has reported accumulations of 2 to 4 inches. St. Louis noted 2.3 inches, with multiple traffic incidents reported on highways and local roads. Authorities in St. Louis are advising drivers to exercise extreme caution due to deteriorating road conditions.
In Nebraska, Omaha and Lincoln received approximately 1.5 inches of snowfall. Chicago, which experienced 8.4 inches on Saturday, faced additional snowfall, impacting both major airports in the city. Forecasts predict only slight accumulations of one to two inches by Monday night, yet winter conditions are likely to continue hampering travel and daily life.
Experts warn that the storm's ramifications might lead to delayed flights and road closures. Residents within the affected areas should stay updated, prepare for snow removal, and take precautions while traveling.
