In India, there has been a surge in the use of weight-loss medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro. Originally designed for diabetes management, these drugs are increasingly sought after for their rapid weight loss effects. Renowned fitness coach Yasmin Karachiwala is sounding the alarm on this concerning trend, pointing out its potential health risks.
India's prevalence of overweight individuals is among the highest globally, leading many to pursue quick solutions. Consequently, medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro have gained massive popularity. Yasmin, with three decades of experience in fitness, warns that misuse of these medications in the absence of medical guidance can lead to severe complications, particularly muscle loss.
She indicates that individuals aiming to shed merely 4 or 5 kilograms have also turned to these injections, seeking instant results without committing to lifestyle changes. Yasmin emphasizes that such practices pose dangers, as muscle loss often substitutes fat loss. Muscle is critical for maintaining strength, balance, and bone density; weakened muscles can result in fragile bones and conditions like osteoporosis with age.
Yasmin acknowledges the medicinal value of these drugs but suggests they should be reserved for those with genuine medical needs, such as diabetes patients or individuals struggling with significant obesity despite prior efforts. The focus should not be on seeking rapid appearance transformations.
Instead, Yasmin advocates for adopting simple yet effective lifestyle habits. Incorporating weight training to enhance muscle mass, ensuring adequate protein intake, and staying hydrated are foundational steps for fostering long-term health.
Building muscle demands time and dedication; it's no easy feat, but essential for overall well-being. Rapid weight loss drugs may offer immediate benefits, but losing muscle could result in adverse health effects later on.
Yasmin conveyed her insights during the inauguration of her Yasmin Karachiwala Body Image studio in New Delhi. Having trained Bollywood luminaries like Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif, her underlying message is clear: prioritize health over fleeting results.
