A norovirus outbreak has been reported at a senior high school in Foshan city, located in south China’s Guangdong Province, where 103 students have fallen ill, local health authorities confirmed on Saturday. Officials clarified that all affected students are in stable condition and no severe or fatal cases have been recorded so far.
The students, who are enrolled at Xinghui Middle School, began showing symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea over recent days. Medical examinations have preliminarily confirmed that the illness was caused by norovirus, a highly contagious virus known to trigger acute gastroenteritis.
Following the detection of the cases, school authorities immediately activated prevention and control measures. The entire school campus has been thoroughly disinfected, and strict health monitoring has been implemented. Attendance checks are being conducted daily to ensure early detection of any new cases. Students showing symptoms are being closely observed and provided with necessary medical care.
An epidemiological investigation is currently underway to trace the source of the infection and assess whether there are any additional risks of transmission. Health officials are working to determine how the virus spread within the school and whether contaminated food, water, or close contact played a role.
According to Guangdong’s disease control authorities, the province typically enters its annual norovirus epidemic season from October and continues through March of the following year. During this period, outbreaks are more likely, especially in crowded environments such as schools, dormitories, and childcare facilities.
Norovirus is one of the most common causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. It spreads rapidly through direct contact, contaminated food or water, and contact with infected surfaces. While the illness usually resolves on its own, it can spread quickly if hygiene measures are not followed.
Health officials have urged schools, parents, and students to remain vigilant during the peak season by maintaining good hand hygiene, ensuring proper sanitation, and promptly reporting symptoms to prevent further spread.
