5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southern Alaska

5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southern Alaska

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Anchorage, Alaska — A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Alaska on Thursday morning, shaking communities around Anchorage and Fox River. The tremor occurred just after 9:30 a.m. Alaska Time, with its epicenter located approximately 29 miles southeast of Fox River and about 110 miles south of Anchorage.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 12 miles, according to seismic data. Residents reported feeling the ground shake across Anchorage, though initial reports indicate there was no significant damage to homes, infrastructure, or businesses. Officials confirmed there were no injuries related to the tremor.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement confirming there is no tsunami threat following the quake. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and are advising residents to stay alert and prepared for any aftershocks, which can sometimes follow moderate earthquakes in seismically active regions.

Southern Alaska is known for its geological instability, lying along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates frequently shift, causing earthquakes. Experts stress that residents should maintain earthquake safety measures, including securing heavy furniture, creating emergency kits, and knowing safe evacuation routes.

Despite the initial scare, officials say that current assessments suggest this earthquake caused minimal disruption. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
