In a groundbreaking achievement for marine conservation, Abu Dhabi is set to reach a 100% score on its Sustainable Fisheries Index by 2025, a dramatic increase from 8% in 2018. This milestone underscores the emirate’s commitment to fish stock restoration through innovative policies, habitat preservation, and sustainable management techniques.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), emphasized that this accomplishment is a testament to the backing from UAE leadership, including President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
He pointed out that the progress is the result of a comprehensive research initiative backed by the Presidential Court, utilizing cutting-edge scientific methodologies to monitor fish populations and study marine ecosystems. These advanced data-driven technologies inform policies and legislative frameworks, establishing marine sustainability as a critical component of national security and a vital strategy for food security, reducing dependence on imports.
His Excellency Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of EAD, added that the uptick in the Sustainable Fisheries Index is attributed to meticulously crafted laws, strategies, and scientific protocols, enabling the rapid recovery of fish stocks exceeding global benchmarks.
Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, remarked that achieving a 100% index sets an international standard for managing marine resources. She praised the collaboration between EAD, the National Guard, the Fishermen’s Association, and local communities, all guided by scientific insights.
Dr. Al Dhaheri further explained that Abu Dhabi is transitioning from protection to prosperity, actively focusing on the restoration of marine life. This long-term initiative is backed by the Sustainable Fisheries Policy, advanced AI applications, and the research vessel Jaywun.
The EAD is dedicated to safeguarding and revitalizing marine habitats through projects aimed at ecosystem rehabilitation, biodiversity enhancement, and increased marine productivity. These efforts encompass the establishment of coral gardens, the deployment of 40,000 artificial reef modules, and the use of AI to oversee fishing practices and environmental conditions.
The Abu Al Abyad Island initiative also releases fish fingerlings from controlled rearing ponds to mitigate losses stemming from overfishing and natural pressures, further enhancing marine biodiversity and supporting sustainable fisheries.
With these initiatives, Abu Dhabi is poised to become a global benchmark in sustainable natural resource management, utilizing science, technology, and community engagement to rejuvenate and conserve marine life for future generations.
