Ukrainian and Russian negotiators met in Abu Dhabi on Friday for another round of talks, with the main focus on territory—still the most difficult issue between both sides. Despite the discussions, there was no visible sign of a compromise, and the meeting ended without any breakthrough, keeping hopes of an early agreement uncertain.
The talks took place at a time when Ukraine is facing its worst energy crisis since the war began nearly four years ago. Russian airstrikes have repeatedly targeted key power facilities and energy infrastructure, causing serious damage and forcing emergency measures across several regions. As a result, many areas are dealing with power shortages and unstable electricity supply, adding pressure on daily life, industries, and essential services.
The continuing attacks have made the situation more challenging for ordinary people, while also increasing concerns about how long the energy system can withstand further strikes. Disruptions have affected everything from household needs to critical operations in hospitals, businesses, and public services, making the energy crisis a major issue alongside the ongoing conflict.
At the same time, Kyiv is under growing pressure from the United States to move closer to a peace agreement. Washington has been urging Ukraine to find a possible path toward negotiations as the war—triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022—continues to drag on. The conflict has not only strained resources but also raised wider worries about long-term stability in the region.
Russia, however, has maintained a firm stance and continues to push strong conditions for ending the fighting. Moscow has demanded that Ukraine hand over full control of the Donbas region, a key eastern industrial area, before Russia would consider stopping the war. Ukraine has shown no willingness to accept such a demand, making a settlement extremely difficult as both sides remain far apart.
With territorial disputes still unresolved and Ukraine’s energy crisis worsening due to ongoing airstrikes, the Abu Dhabi meeting made it clear that diplomacy is continuing, but a peace deal remains out of reach for now.
