Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has made a significant advancement in the UAE's healthcare and research landscape with the inauguration of the Abu Dhabi University Cancer Research Institute (ADU-CRI). This new establishment aims to enhance sophisticated cancer research and tailor-made treatment strategies, representing a crucial moment for the educational and medical fields in the nation.
The opening event, held at ADU's Innovation Center, gathered university officials, representatives from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, and key stakeholders from both healthcare and research sectors. This launch mirrors ADU’s extensive commitment to fostering innovation in science and education, while also supporting national objectives under the We the UAE 2031 vision.
Through ADU-CRI, the university intends to position itself as a premier institution for cancer research, integrating academic insights with practical clinical applications. The institute emphasizes translational research, facilitating the efficient transition of scientific breakthroughs from labs to hospitals and patient care. Collaboration is a focal point of this initiative, linking researchers, clinicians, governmental bodies, and industry players to tackle cancer-related issues most pertinent to the region.
ADU-CRI comprises five focused research divisions, which cover genomics and bioinformatics, biomarker research, drug development, bioengineering, and public health research. Each division addresses a vital element of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, endorsing an all-encompassing and multidisciplinary research methodology.
The institute is outfitted with cutting-edge lab technologies including flow cytometry, Luminex systems, quantitative PCR, and advanced sequencing platforms, enabling researchers to perform both preclinical and clinical trials on cancer priority areas identified by health authorities in the UAE. A specialized bioengineering lab further enhances capabilities in biosensor innovation, data analysis, and advanced medical research.
Strong collaborations with leading healthcare and research entities in Abu Dhabi have positioned ADU-CRI to work on multiple active projects. These include initiatives to refine breast cancer diagnostics and treatments, research employing biobanked samples for sophisticated analysis, and programs seeking novel approaches in personalised cancer care.
Current investigations at the institute involve biomarker studies in triple-negative breast cancer, techniques for early lung cancer detection via liquid biopsies, and genetic research linked to cancer metastasis. Collectively, these efforts strive to improve early diagnosis, enhance treatment accuracy, and bolster evidence-focused healthcare policies in the UAE.
The establishment of ADU-CRI underscores Abu Dhabi University’s evolving role in advancing the country's healthcare ambitions through research and innovation. By integrating advanced facilities, strategic alliances, and region-specific studies, the institute is projected to make significant contributions to the evolution of cancer care and the broader development of the UAE’s life sciences industry.
