His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, has celebrated a significant environmental achievement with the planting of ADNOC's five millionth mangrove seedling at the Al Nouf mangrove forest in Abu Dhabi.
This milestone indicates that ADNOC has surpassed the halfway mark in its ambitious goal of planting 10 million mangroves by 2030, a key initiative supporting the UAE's broader objective of planting 100 million mangroves nationwide by the decade's end.
The mangrove program forms a crucial aspect of ADNOC's commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and nature-based solutions for climate change. Mangroves are essential in safeguarding coastlines, capturing carbon, supporting marine ecosystems, and enhancing the resilience of coastal habitats.
During his visit, Dr. Al Jaber emphasized that environmental stewardship is central to ADNOC's strategy and vital for creating sustainable, long-term benefits for the UAE. He noted the company's significant advancements toward its 2030 target through the employment of cutting-edge technologies that facilitate conservation while responsibly addressing global energy demands.
Launched in 2023, ADNOC's mangrove planting initiative utilizes AI-driven drone technology developed in the UAE for quick, precise, and large-scale planting. The initiative also incorporates advanced monitoring systems and machine learning tools that assess mangrove health, growth rates, and restoration success, ensuring long-lasting environmental gains.
Community involvement has been integral from the project's inception. In 2025, over 1,000 volunteers dedicated thousands of hours to planting efforts. To date, around 6,000 individuals have joined ADNOC's activities, including mangrove planting and coastal clean-ups across Abu Dhabi.
Participants have included students, community organizations, individuals with disabilities, and ADNOC staff, all contributing actively at each phase of the initiative.
In 2024, ADNOC collaborated with the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, led by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), to further enhance mangrove restoration, support research, and foster greater private sector and community engagement. These initiatives align with UAE's Plant the Emirates Programme and the World Economic Forum's One Trillion Trees Initiative.
With the successful planting of five million mangroves, ADNOC's program stands as one of the region's most extensive corporate-led nature restoration projects, solidifying Abu Dhabi's role as a frontrunner in environmental sustainability and conservation.
