AIIMS-Trained Gastroenterologist Reveals Detox Tea Risks: 7 Mistakes to Avoid

AIIMS-Trained Gastroenterologist Reveals Detox Tea Risks: 7 Mistakes to Avoid

Post by : Saif Rahman

Tea enjoys immense popularity across India, often considered a morning staple. While it offers numerous health benefits, consuming it improperly can lead to issues. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist currently practicing in California, has issued a warning regarding prevalent tea-drinking errors that can adversely affect liver and gut health.

In a recent Instagram post on November 14, Dr. Sethi detailed seven habits surrounding tea consumption that individuals should avoid. He emphasized that despite tea's advantages, certain practices can gradually harm the body.

1. Drinking Tea on an Empty Stomach

The doctor cautioned that starting the day with tea on an empty stomach might irritate the stomach lining, leading to issues such as acid reflux, nausea, and stomach pain.

2. Excessive Sugar in Tea

Many tea drinkers sweeten their beverages or opt for sugary iced teas. Dr. Sethi pointed out that these products frequently contain 30–40 grams of sugar, which heightens the risk of fatty liver and diabetes.

3. Reliance on Detox or Slimming Teas

He warned against many 'detox' or weight-loss teas that are laden with laxatives, as these can lead to dehydration, mineral imbalance, and lasting damage to gut health. He advised complete avoidance of these products.

4. Overconsumption of Green Tea Extract

While green tea possesses health benefits, Dr. Sethi mentioned that green tea supplements can incur risks. Some rare instances have associated these extracts with liver problems. He recommended that fresh, brewed tea is a safer option.

Common Errors to Avoid

Though seven mistakes were spotlighted, the core message is straightforward: enjoy tea thoughtfully. Limit sugar intake, steer clear of processed tea products, and refrain from consuming tea at inappropriate times. Simple adjustments can safeguard your gut and liver, making tea a healthier choice overall.
