Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday broadened his warning over enforcement weaknesses, saying failures at the local council level are seriously undermining governance, public cleanliness, and confidence in authorities.
His remarks came just days after he issued a stern ultimatum to heads of federal enforcement agencies, urging them to act decisively against financial crimes or step aside if unable to deliver results.
Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Ar-Rahimah in Taman Greenwood, Anwar stressed that enforcement problems were not limited to federal agencies but were also widespread at state and municipal levels.
He pointed to poor cleanliness standards, unchecked illegal roadside stalls, and weak control over foreign worker access as clear signs of ineffective implementation on the ground.
“The Cabinet meeting earlier today discussed enforcement issues in detail. While some measures have been taken, we cannot afford to be complacent,” Anwar said.
The prime minister emphasized that laws must be enforced firmly and consistently at every level of government, noting that shortcomings exist from the federal administration down to local authorities.
He added that directives announced earlier to strengthen enforcement would continue until they deliver visible and positive outcomes for both the public and the nation.
Anwar also underlined the importance of accountability at the highest levels of leadership, saying reform must begin from the top.
“Decay often starts at the top. That is why senior officials, including ministers, must be closely monitored and enforcement at the highest levels must be strengthened,” he said.
