The Assam government is planning to make Aadhaar card rules stricter for adults to stop illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this decision on Friday. He said that making Aadhaar card rules tougher will also help the government find and send back illegal foreigners living in Assam.
Speaking at a press conference after a Cabinet meeting, CM Sarma said, “Today, we discussed a plan where Aadhaar cards for adults will be given only after proper verification. The Cabinet will soon take a final decision on this.”
He explained that almost every adult in Assam already has an Aadhaar card. But if any new adult applies for one, their details will be checked carefully. “Only the District Commissioner will have the power to approve the Aadhaar card after the new rules are implemented,” he added.
CM Sarma said this strict checking will make sure that no illegal immigrant can get an Aadhaar card in Assam. It will also help the government to track them and deport them easily in the future.
The government believes these steps will keep Assam safe and secure, ensuring that only genuine residents hold identity documents like Aadhaar.
