The Assam government has formally requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore following the tragic death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. This move aims to facilitate cooperation between Indian and Singaporean authorities, ensuring access to case details and assistance in bringing back any accused individuals involved in the incident.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore after reportedly drowning while swimming without a life jacket during a yacht trip. The Assam government has constituted a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta, to probe all aspects of the incident. Two Assam Police officers are expected to visit Singapore soon to assist in the investigation.
The invocation of the MLAT is seen as a critical step in ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation, reflecting the state's commitment to securing justice for the late singer and his family.
