Bangladesh has formally protested the treatment of a senior adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after he was reportedly detained and questioned for several hours upon arrival at New Delhi airport. The incident has added fresh strain to relations between the two neighboring countries.
According to Bangladeshi officials, government strategy adviser Zahed Ur Rahman traveled to New Delhi to attend an international conference. Upon arrival, he was stopped by airport authorities and questioned for several hours before being allowed to continue his visit.
In response, Bangladesh summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe in Dhaka and formally conveyed its concerns over the incident. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described the episode as “unexpected and unfortunate” and said the government expected an explanation from Indian authorities.
India's Ministry of External Affairs did not immediately issue a public response regarding the matter. The reported questioning of the adviser comes at a time when both countries are attempting to manage several sensitive bilateral issues.
Relations between India and Bangladesh have remained complicated since the political changes that followed the 2024 uprising in Bangladesh. Although ties improved after Tarique Rahman became prime minister earlier this year, disagreements continue over a number of diplomatic and security matters.
One of the major issues remains Bangladesh's request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving office. Dhaka has repeatedly raised the matter, while New Delhi has not taken any public action regarding the request.
The two countries have also recently exchanged concerns over alleged cross-border migrant pushback incidents. Despite ongoing cooperation between border security forces and agreements to strengthen intelligence sharing, several disputes continue to test the relationship between the neighboring nations.
