Flaxseeds have surged in popularity as more people look to improve their diets. These tiny brown seeds are a concentrated source of omega-3 fats, fibre and other nutrients that support overall wellbeing, but many are unsure about the best timing to consume them for maximum effect.
Nutritionist Deepsikha Jain, who focuses on public health and diabetes education, shared guidance in a brief online video. She emphasised that flaxseeds are beneficial when taken in the right quantity and at suitable times, recommending only 1 to 2 tablespoons per day.
She pointed out three ideal times to include flaxseeds in a daily routine.
First, taking flaxseeds on an empty stomach at the start of the day can be effective. Mixed with water and consumed first thing, they supply healthy fats like omega-3s that may aid digestion, help regulate blood sugar and support gut function. People who struggle with bloating or slow digestion may find this approach useful.
Second, the nutritionist recommended having a spoon of flaxseeds before meals. Thanks to their high fibre content, flaxseeds can promote a feeling of fullness and curb overeating, which may be helpful for those managing weight or reducing between-meal snacking.
Third, she suggested using flaxseeds as a mid-day snack. Stirred into yoghurt or fruit, they make a nutritious, compact snack that adds protein, fibre and beneficial bacteria to support digestion and keep hunger at bay between meals.
Flaxseeds are linked to heart and digestive benefits and may assist blood sugar control, but the nutritionist cautioned that excess intake can cause discomfort. She also advised drinking plenty of water when consuming them so the fibre can function properly.
This advice offers practical tips for everyday eating, while she reminded anyone with medical issues to consult their doctor before changing their diet.
Small in size but rich in nutrients, flaxseeds can contribute positively to a healthier lifestyle when used in the right amounts and at thoughtful times.
