At least seven people died on Saturday when a bus carrying 19 passengers overturned on a mountainous road in the northern province of Yen Bai, Vietnam. The 29-seat vehicle, transporting members of a charity group, was traveling downhill when it lost control, flipped over, and was crushed, officials said.
The tragic accident occurred on a steep and narrow road known for its challenging terrain. Rescue teams rushed to the scene following reports of the crash early Saturday morning. By 10:30 a.m. local time, rescuers had pulled 10 survivors from the wreckage. However, several passengers remained trapped inside the damaged bus, prompting the deployment of heavy machinery to cut through the vehicle and reach those still inside.
Hoang Anh Tuan, chairman of Phinh Ho commune, where the accident took place, said initial findings suggest the crash was caused by brake failure as the bus descended the mountain. “The driver likely lost control due to the brakes failing on the steep slope,” Tuan explained.
Emergency response teams comprising local police, military units, medical personnel, and volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the morning to aid victims and clear the scene. Medical staff immediately began treating the injured survivors, some of whom were reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the exact cause of the accident. At the time of reporting, calls to local authorities for further comments remained unanswered.
The accident has shocked the local community and raised concerns over road safety on mountainous routes frequently used by passenger vehicles in the region.
