A 22-year-old Indian-origin student studying in the United States has been arrested on serious charges involving arson and making terroristic threats against his family members. Manojh Sai Lella, a senior at the University of Texas at Dallas, was taken into custody by the Frisco Police Department on Monday following an investigation into troubling events at his home.
Police were alerted after family members contacted authorities, reporting that Lella was experiencing a mental health crisis and had made threatening statements. Further investigation revealed that Lella allegedly attempted to set fire to the family home several days prior to the police response. This act raised significant safety concerns for the household and the surrounding community.
Lella now faces multiple charges. The primary charge is arson with intent to damage a habitat or place of worship, which is classified as a first-degree felony. Additionally, he is charged with terroristic threat against a family or household member, considered a Class A misdemeanor under Texas law. Despite the charge involving potential damage to a place of worship, authorities clarified that there is no evidence indicating any actual threat directed at a religious site.
The court has set Lella’s bond at $100,000 for the arson charge and $3,500 for the terroristic threat, totaling $103,500. Police and court officials are continuing their investigation into the incident while ensuring the safety and security of the family involved.
This case underscores ongoing concerns about mental health issues among young adults and the potential risks they may pose during episodes of crisis. As the legal process moves forward, attention will also be focused on providing appropriate mental health support alongside the judicial proceedings.
Lella’s arrest has sent shockwaves through his university community and raised discussions about the importance of mental health awareness and intervention, especially for international students who may face additional pressures away from home. The University of Texas at Dallas has not yet released any official statements regarding the incident.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and evaluate the situation to determine further legal action and support measures for those affected.
