Anticipation for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™ rose further today as organisers revealed BOMA, a desert owl, as the tournament’s official mascot. The announcement comes just days before the youth competition begins in Qatar, signalling a cultural and sporting emblem designed to resonate with fans and players alike.
The name BOMA is drawn from the Arabic term for “owl,” chosen to reflect qualities of keen observation and wisdom. The mascot is intended to honour the scouts and talent-spotters whose quiet work identifies promising young footballers and helps guide their careers onto the international stage.
BOMA also pays tribute to Velibor “Bora” Milutinović, the Serbian coach famed for steering five different national teams into five consecutive FIFA World Cups™. By linking the mascot to Bora’s legacy, organisers underscore values of mentorship, development and global football experience.
This edition will be the first U-17 World Cup to feature 48 teams, expanding opportunities for youth players worldwide and making the 2025 tournament a landmark in FIFA’s effort to broaden participation at the youth level.
Regional interest is heightened by the presence of the United Arab Emirates national side among the competitors, reflecting the Gulf’s growing investment in youth development and the broader regional momentum in football.
The U-17 World Cup has a strong record as a launchpad for future stars. Previous participants who later rose to global prominence include Gianluigi Buffon, Luís Figo, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Eden Hazard, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Son Heung-min and Francesco Totti.
Hosting the tournament reinforces Qatar’s emerging role as an established venue for major football events. Building on infrastructure and hospitality showcased during the FIFA World Cup 2022™, the country aims to deliver a well-organised, fan-friendly competition.
Beyond matchdays, BOMA will be active in community outreach and educational programmes, visiting schools and local events to encourage children and teenagers to pursue football, learn, and aspire with clarity and commitment.
With kick-off approaching, the mascot’s unveiling marks the start of a week of celebration. BOMA’s blend of cultural symbolism and sporting spirit is set to accompany fans and families through a tournament focused on discovery, development and international competition.
