In a shocking act of violence, Bondi Beach, Sydney, has witnessed its deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years, resulting in 15 fatalities and numerous injuries.
The sole assailant, Naveed Akram, is facing a staggering 59 charges, which include 15 counts of murder and charges related to terrorism as confirmed by New South Wales (NSW) Police.

40 counts of grievous bodily harm with intent to murder
1 count of committing a terrorist act
1 count of displaying a prohibited terrorist organisation symbol
Akram is currently critically injured and participated in court proceedings from his hospital bed. The case is set for adjournment until April 2026, as reported by NSW courts.
Father's Death in Police Encounter
During the incident, Akram's father, Sajid Akram (50), was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. Investigators later revealed that Sajid had originated from Hyderabad, India, and maintained minimal communication with family there.
Targeting of Jewish Community Confirmed
Authorities confirmed that the shooting intentionally targeted Australia’s Jewish community amidst a Hanukkah celebration. Among the deceased are:

Matilda, a 10-year-old girl
Boris and Sofia Gurman, who were seen confronting the shooter
Terrorism Link Established
This incident has been formally classified as a terrorist attack by the NSW Police.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated that the violence appears to stem from Islamic State (ISIS) ideology.
Travel to Philippines Under Scrutiny
Naveed and Sajid Akram's travel to the Philippines between November 1–28 is under investigation, with Davao City indicated as their destination.

Mourning and Community Response
A floral tribute has been created at Bondi Beach.
Thousands gathered for the first funeral held for Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who played a pivotal role in organizing the Hanukkah event.
Rabbi Levi Wolff described the loss as “unimaginable”, honoring the late rabbi's lifelong dedication to the community.
Funerals for other victims, like young Matilda, are planned for the upcoming days.
