Venezuela’s Maduro Detained in Infamous Brooklyn Federal Jail

Venezuela’s Maduro Detained in Infamous Brooklyn Federal Jail

Post by : Meena Ariff

The Brooklyn jail where Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is currently being held is one of the most controversial detention facilities in the United States.

Known as the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn, the jail opened in the early 1990s and today houses around 1,300 inmates. It is usually the first stop for people awaiting trial in federal courts in New York, including those accused of drug trafficking, gang crimes, and financial fraud.

After Maduro’s capture, Venezuelan expatriates gathered outside the jail, waving flags and celebrating as a law enforcement convoy believed to be carrying Maduro and his wife arrived late Saturday night.

MDC Brooklyn has previously held several high-profile inmates, including music stars R. Kelly and Sean “Diddy” Combs, crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, and Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein.

Maduro is not the first former world leader to be detained there. Juan Orlando Hernández, the ex-president of Honduras, was once held at the same facility while facing US drug trafficking charges. He was later convicted, sentenced to 45 years in prison, and eventually pardoned by former US President Donald Trump.

Despite its location near a shopping mall and within sight of the Statue of Liberty, the jail has earned a grim reputation. Lawyers and detainees have described it as a place plagued by violence, neglect, and unsafe conditions. In 2024 alone, two inmates were killed inside the facility, while several staff members were charged with corruption-related crimes.

One of the darkest chapters came in 2019, when a power outage left inmates without heat or light during winter for nearly a week.

In response to mounting criticism, the Federal Bureau of Prisons says conditions have improved. Authorities claim they have added staff, fixed hundreds of maintenance issues, upgraded utilities, and reduced inmate numbers, leading to less crime and contraband.

Still, concerns remain.

While detained, Maduro may encounter familiar figures, including Hugo Carvajal, a former Venezuelan intelligence chief who later turned against him and is now cooperating with US authorities. Other inmates include alleged members of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, which has been linked to violent crimes across the United States.

The jail has remained under close watch since 2021, when another New York federal jail was shut down following Jeffrey Epstein’s death, raising serious questions about safety and oversight across the federal prison system.
