The extensive search for the suspect linked to the tragic shooting at Brown University has concluded as federal officials announced that the suspect is deceased. Authorities suspect the individual took his own life, with the body located in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, approximately 30 kilometers north of Boston.
The announcement was made by Christina Sterling, spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Leah Foley in Boston, along with confirmation from two other federal officials. Investigation teams had converged on the storage facility the previous Thursday while probing the Brown University incident.
While the identity of the suspect remains undisclosed, it has been reported that federal prosecutors in Massachusetts were preparing to file criminal charges before the suspect's death.
The shooting last Saturday inside a classroom at Brown University resulted in the death of two students and injuries to at least eight others, shaking the community in Providence, Rhode Island. Mayor Brett Smiley noted that the drawn-out search heightened anxiety among students and residents, who were eager for answers.
In a separate incident, MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, 47, was found dead from a gunshot wound at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts earlier this week. Federal authorities have stated that they do not suspect a connection between these two incidents, despite initial concerns. Loureiro was a well-regarded professor in nuclear science, engineering, and physics.
Investigators focused on residential security camera footage after the suspect fled the Brown University scene, as the campus’s surveillance was inadequate. Police shared images of a masked figure thought to be the shooter and frequently appealed for assistance from the public.
Although a suspect was briefly detained shortly after the attack, police later confirmed that he was not involved. The investigation continues as officials seek to clarify the timeline and motives behind these tragic events.
