Chilling Assault by Settlers Leaves Palestinian Woman in Critical Condition

Chilling Assault by Settlers Leaves Palestinian Woman in Critical Condition

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A horrifying incident occurred in Turmus Ayya, where a Palestinian woman was critically wounded after being assaulted by masked Israeli settlers. This brutal attack, filmed by US journalist Jasper Nathaniel, shows the perpetrator repeatedly striking 55-year-old Afaf Abu Alia, also referred to as Umm Saleh, on her head with a heavy wooden stick. She was in her family's olive field participating in the harvest when the violence erupted.

The video footage reveals a young male settler aggressively swinging a hefty wooden stick as he targeted Alia. Eyewitnesses reported that he knocked her unconscious and continued the assault while she lay defenseless on the ground. Following the attack, she was urgently transported to a nearby hospital, where she is now in intensive care, suffering from a severe brain hemorrhage. Two additional individuals were also hurt, including a local Palestinian and a foreign volunteer, illustrating the risks to Palestinian farmers and those supporting them during harvest time.

The incident has sparked outrage globally. Nathaniel, who captured the footage, accused the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) of luring residents into danger without intervening during the attack. In contrast, the IDF asserted that its troops acted to disperse any confrontations and denounced violence, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining order. However, the absence of arrests raises significant doubts regarding accountability for settler aggression in the West Bank.

International human rights advocates are closely monitoring the developments. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine, pointed out the pattern of attacks on Palestinians, particularly during the olive harvest. Sharing the video clip on social platforms, she criticized the lack of response from Israeli authorities and challenged the ethical implications for Israelis who choose to remain silent amidst such violence. This occurrence highlights the persistent strain in the West Bank, where Palestinian farmers routinely encounter harassment and aggression from settlers during essential agricultural periods.

This alarming attack has shone a spotlight on the perils faced by Palestinian farmers in the West Bank while raising urgent questions about accountability, protection measures, and human rights. As the injured woman fights for survival in the ICU, calls for justice and enhanced safeguards for Palestinian communities are growing louder.
