The Canadian government has issued a travel advisory warning citizens holding passports with the nonbinary “X” gender designation that they may face difficulties when attempting to enter the United States. The advisory, released by Global Affairs Canada, stated that while Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee entry or transit in countries that do not recognize this designation.
“You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the ‘X’ gender identifier,” the advisory said, highlighting the potential challenges for nonbinary and transgender travelers.
The warning comes amid U.S. policy changes under President Donald Trump, who has implemented measures affecting trans and nonbinary individuals since his return to the White House in January 2025. During his inaugural address, Trump stated that there are only “two sexes, male and female,” signaling his administration’s stance on gender identity.
Under an executive order, the U.S. State Department attempted to stop issuing passports with the “X” gender marker, including for individuals whose gender differs from their birth-assigned sex. However, a court injunction blocked the policy, and a recent U.S. appeals court denied the Trump administration’s attempt to reinstate it.
Between 2019 and 2024, Canada issued approximately 3,400 passports with the “X” gender identifier. The advisory serves as a precaution for travelers navigating international borders where gender recognition policies may vary.
Experts and advocacy groups have urged travelers to remain informed about cross-border restrictions and to plan ahead when holding passports with nonbinary or alternative gender markers.
This development highlights ongoing tensions between U.S. gender policies and international recognition of nonbinary and transgender identities, emphasizing the importance of awareness for Canadians traveling abroad.
