A ceasefire has been achieved between the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) following intense violence in Aleppo that resulted in civilian casualties. This agreement was reached late on Monday after a series of clashes incited widespread concern among the populace.
Syria’s state news source reported that the military command had directed its troops to cease strikes on SDF positions. In response, the SDF announced it would also refrain from retaliation after discussions to ease the tensions.
The clashes have resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians, as confirmed by Syrian health officials. Numerous individuals were injured, including children and civil defense personnel, with shelling impacting residential areas and forcing families to take refuge indoors amidst the chaos.
Both parties have exchanged accusations regarding the instigation of violence. Syrian officials claimed that the SDF initiated hostilities against military and security units in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods. Conversely, the SDF denied these allegations, asserting that armed factions tied to the government were responsible, employing heavy artillery in populated areas.
Residents recounted a harrowing experience, noting relentless artillery fire and observing a significant military presence throughout the city. One individual described the explosions as deafening, inducing panic amongst families.
This outbreak of violence coincided with remarks from Turkey’s foreign minister, emphasizing that the SDF had failed to uphold a commitment to merge into Syria’s national armed forces by year-end. Turkey categorizes the SDF as a terrorist entity and has issued warnings regarding potential military intervention should the integration not proceed.
The integration of the SDF remains a complex issue, given the group's substantial influence throughout the war as a U.S. ally, controlling vital regions in the northeast, including oil reserves and facilities housing Islamic State detainees. There are concerns regarding the SDF’s autonomy if it fully assimilates into national forces.
Unresolved tensions could spark renewed conflict, potentially involving regional actors like Turkey, raising alarming prospects of reversing decade-long efforts towards stability in Syria.
In a precautionary move, the governor of Aleppo announced the closure of all educational institutions and government offices in the city center on Tuesday. Authorities stated that these measures were essential for civilian safety and to promote a return to tranquility.
While the ceasefire signifies a positive turn, the overall situation remains fragile. Achieving sustained peace will require trust, meaningful dialogue, and decisive actions to tackle persistent political and security challenges.
