Authorities in the Philippines have officially ended search and rescue operations in Cebu province after a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the region on Tuesday. The current death toll stands at 72, and officials do not expect this number to rise significantly, as most missing individuals have now been accounted for.
Attention has now shifted toward providing immediate aid to thousands of survivors affected by the disaster. Over 20,000 people have been displaced, while more than 300 have suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe.
The earthquake, which struck the waters off central Cebu, caused widespread destruction across the province. Buildings and homes collapsed, and landslides triggered by the quake added to the devastation. Heavy rain and power outages made rescue operations challenging in the first days following the disaster.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr visited the hardest-hit city of Bogo, home to around 90,000 people, to reassure displaced families and inspect relief efforts. He acknowledged the difficulties in setting up safe evacuation centers due to structural damage but promised that the government would provide essential supplies such as food, water, and electricity, including mobile generators if necessary. “Whatever the people need, we will make sure we can provide,” he said.
The Philippines is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a belt of earthquakes and volcanoes stretching from South America to Russia. The country experiences over 800 earthquakes every year, making it highly prone to natural disasters.
Authorities and aid organizations are now focusing on delivering emergency supplies and supporting communities as they begin the slow process of recovery. Relief efforts are being coordinated to ensure that displaced families receive shelter, medical care, and basic necessities in the coming days.
The Cebu earthquake is considered the deadliest in the Philippines in more than a decade, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to seismic events and the importance of disaster preparedness.
