China Conducts Major Military Drills Near Taiwan with Rocket Launches

China Conducts Major Military Drills Near Taiwan with Rocket Launches

Post by : Saif Rahman

In a significant display of military might, China executed its most extensive military maneuvers in proximity to Taiwan, launching rockets into adjacent waters while encircling the island with various warships and aircraft. These exercises have heightened concerns across the region as they seemingly strategize a potential blockade against Taiwan amidst real-world scenarios.

The live-fire drills, which the Chinese military confirmed lasted approximately 10 hours on Tuesday, involved rocket launches to the north and south of Taiwan. Simultaneously, fighter jets, bombers, destroyers, and amphibious ships maneuvered into critical locations around the island. This operation has been designated as “Justice Mission 2025.”

Taiwan's defense ministry acknowledged the occurrence of Chinese live-fire exercises near its northern maritime boundaries. Authorities reported that fragments from the exercises entered Taiwan's nearby maritime zone, which is just outside its territorial waters. Taiwan maintained a vigilant watch on the situation to assess whether China would launch missiles across the island, reminiscent of similar drills conducted in 2022.

Videos released by the Chinese military depicted mobile rocket launchers firing towards the sea, with these launchers believed to have the capability of hitting targets throughout Taiwan. Taiwanese security officials indicated that China was simulating attacks on crucial defense installations, including U.S.-supplied weaponry used by Taiwan for coastal protection.

The drills commenced shortly after the United States unveiled a significant military aid package for Taiwan. China vehemently opposes any foreign military assistance to the island, viewing such actions as meddling in its domestic matters. Conversely, Taiwan argues that these armaments are essential for its self-defense.

President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan stated that the island's military was prepared to protect the nation, asserting, however, that Taiwan seeks to avoid conflict. He emphasized the government's commitment to act rationally and responsibly to ensure public safety during this tense period.

Commercial operations have been disrupted amid military activity, with Taiwan's aviation authority reporting several affected flight routes, albeit most international flights remained operational. Flights to areas close to China were canceled, impacting thousands of travelers. At sea, encounters between Chinese coastguard vessels and Taiwanese ships resulted in tense situations.

Experts warn that an actual blockade could trigger significant global complications, given that the Taiwan Strait stands as a pivotal trade route through which trillions of dollars in goods transit annually. Significant disruptions could adversely affect worldwide supply chains and economies far beyond Asia.

Additionally, China utilized these drills to exhibit advanced military hardware, including large amphibious ships intended for landing troops, vehicles, and helicopters. Analysts interpret these maneuvers as indicative of China's escalating military prowess and confidence.

While China maintains that these drills serve defensive purposes, many observers perceive them as a calculated message directed towards Taiwan, the United States, and the broader international community. With tensions on the rise, the situation surrounding Taiwan remains a critical flashpoint in global geopolitical dynamics.
