China Tests Wireless Freight Train System, Boosts Cargo Efficiency

China has achieved a major breakthrough in railway technology by successfully linking multiple freight trains through a wireless system that eliminates the need for mechanical couplings. The trial, conducted on Monday along the Baoshen Railway in Inner Mongolia, involved seven trains, each weighing 5,000 tonnes, moving together in a coordinated convoy. This innovative system dynamically manages the distance between trains, allowing them to run closer together than traditional setups while maintaining safety, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.

The wireless control system was developed by China Shenhua Energy, a subsidiary of the state-owned CHN Energy company. It operates similarly to the Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) used in modern automobiles, combining adaptive cruise control and automated speed adjustment to ensure smooth and safe operations. By monitoring relative speed and absolute distance through train-to-train and train-to-ground communication, the technology allows trains to form close formations without the need to lay additional tracks.

During the test run, the seven freight trains carried a combined cargo load of 35,000 tonnes, demonstrating the potential of the system to increase capacity on existing rail lines. In conventional railway operations, strict safety regulations require trains to maintain significant spacing, especially for heavy or fast-moving freight. The new virtual coupling system enables faster braking and synchronized movement, effectively reducing gaps between trains while enhancing efficiency.

China has invested heavily in its freight train network, recognizing its advantages in terms of safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact. According to China Daily, the nation transported over three billion tonnes of cargo in the first three quarters of 2025 alone, underscoring the scale and importance of its rail freight operations. This technological advancement could further optimize logistics, increase cargo throughput, and reduce the financial and environmental costs of expanding railway infrastructure.

By pioneering wireless train control and virtual coupling systems, China continues to set new standards in railway innovation, demonstrating the country’s commitment to modernizing its transportation network while addressing growing demands for freight efficiency.

This development positions China as a global leader in railway technology, capable of moving large volumes of freight more safely and efficiently than ever before, and represents a major step forward for the future of sustainable and advanced freight transport.
