The Philippine Coast Guard has reported injuries to three Filipino fishermen and significant damage to two fishing vessels after the Chinese Coast Guard deployed water cannons near a contested shoal in the South China Sea. This incident occurred on Friday at Sabina Shoal, where numerous Filipino fishing boats had been active.
Chinese vessels allegedly obstructed the fishing activities by using blocking tactics and severing the anchor lines of several Filipino boats, posing serious risks to the crews involved.
“We urge the Chinese Coast Guard to adhere to internationally accepted maritime conduct and prioritize the safety of life at sea over hostile enforcement actions that threaten innocent fishermen,” stated the Philippine Coast Guard.
China’s embassy in Manila has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this incident. On the same day, the Chinese Coast Guard claimed it had repelled several Philippine vessels, referring to such actions as "control measures." Philippine officials interpreted this as an acknowledgment of wrongdoing, with Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela stating, “They admitted this evil act towards our fishermen.”
The Philippine Coast Guard dispatched vessels to assist the injured fishermen, facing hindrances from Chinese ships along the way. However, rescuers ultimately reached those in need, offering medical care and crucial supplies.
Known as Escoda Shoal in the Philippines and Xianbin Reef in China, Sabina Shoal is located about 150 km (95 miles) west of Palawan province and falls within the Philippine exclusive economic zone. China asserts extensive claims over the South China Sea, which constitutes a key international shipping lane valued at over $3 trillion annually, overlapping with the exclusive economic zones of nearby countries including Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
In 2016, an international arbitration tribunal ruled that China's sweeping claims lacked legal foundation. However, China dismissed the ruling and maintains its assertion of authority over significant portions of the South China Sea, often leading to confrontations with other nations' fishing and naval vessels.
This latest incident underscores the persistent tensions in the area, where fishermen frequently confront perilous situations stemming from territorial disputes. The Philippine government has reiterated the necessity for calm and compliance with international maritime laws to safeguard its fishermen.
