In South Auckland, New Zealand, a scheduled Sikh Nagar Kirtan procession met disruption on Saturday as a Christian group confronted the participants, prompting authorities to step in to prevent any escalation.
As reported by the New Zealand Herald, the protest was organized by the True Patriots of NZ, a group associated with Brian Tamaki's Destiny Church, a prominent Christian fundamentalist organization. This incident occurred during a traditional Sikh religious celebration.
Incident Details
Social media footage captured confrontations where members of the Christian group donned blue shirts emblazoned with phrases like “Kiwis First” and “Keep NZ, NZ,” holding a significant banner that proclaimed:
“This is New Zealand, not India.”
The protesters performed a haka, a traditional Māori war dance, as they faced off with the Sikh celebrants. Police were visible between the two groups to maintain order and ensure safety.
Brian Tamaki's Statements
Brian Tamaki, associated with the protesting faction, uploaded a video to social media with the remark:
“THIS IS OUR LAND. THIS IS OUR STAND.”
In another post, he expressed, “Kiwis will not remain silent while foreign faiths invade. We will stand for our homeland, our beliefs, and the Kiwi way of life.”
Law Enforcement Response
According to NZ Police Inspector Matt Hoyes, around 50 individuals blocked the road at 2 PM in an effort to interrupt the parade. “Police acted promptly to ensure the parade could proceed safely. Additional officers were assigned to escort the participants along the rest of the route,” said Hoyes.
He emphasized that while peaceful protest is a right, “any actions posing a threat to public safety or intimidating those exercising their rights will not be tolerated.”
Reactions from the Sikh Community
The New Zealand Sikh Youth organization expressed strong disapproval of the disruption, asserting that the Nagar Kirtan was conducted with all necessary permissions.
In their statement, they clarified: “A Nagar Kirtan is a serene cultural and religious celebration, where sharing free food with the community is a core Sikh principle.”
They added that the chanting and haka from the protesting group starkly contrasted the peaceful intent of the Sikh event.
