Severe Cold and Snow Anticipated in Ottawa This Week

Severe Cold and Snow Anticipated in Ottawa This Week

Post by : Meena Ariff

As southern Ontario grapples with a winter storm, Ottawa has managed to sidestep the worst of the snowfall. Nonetheless, the city isn't escaping the harsh winter chill, with a significant drop in temperatures forecasted in the coming days.

On Sunday, the temperature is projected to hover around 0°C, but as the week unfolds, Environment Canada predicts that daytime highs will remain below the freezing mark. By Thursday night, temperatures could plummet to a frigid -13°C, marking one of the coldest periods this season.

The piercing cold will be exacerbated by strong winds. Southwest gusts may reach up to 50 km/h during the day on Sunday, shifting to a northwest direction with comparable intensity after midnight. Although winds might ease somewhat on Monday, early morning wind chill could make it feel as cold as -14°C, raising safety concerns for those engaging in outdoor activities or traveling.

Snow accumulation is also in the forecast. Ottawa could see anywhere from 5 to 10 cm of snow by Sunday’s conclusion, although weather conditions might change unexpectedly. Regions in eastern Ontario, particularly near Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, could experience brief rain mixed with snow before the cold sets back in.

Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind motorists to stay prepared for swiftly changing driving conditions and to adapt their speed and behavior accordingly for safety.

With frigid temperatures, gusty winds, and accumulating snow on the horizon, Ottawa residents are advised to dress warmly, exercise caution while traveling, and stay updated on local weather developments for any abrupt changes.
