On Tuesday, Japan heightened its military alert after Russian and Chinese aircraft conducted a joint air patrol in proximity to its territory, intensifying the already delicate relations between Tokyo and Beijing. The Japanese defense ministry stated that it deployed fighter jets to observe the situation.
As per their briefing, two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers navigated from the Sea of Japan towards the East China Sea, where they converged with two Chinese H-6 bombers. Together, these aircraft executed an extensive joint operation over the Pacific. Additionally, four Chinese J-16 fighter jets entered the formation between the islands of Okinawa and Miyako, an area recognized as international airspace.
Japan simultaneously noted other Russian military activities in the Sea of Japan, including an A-50 early-warning aircraft and two Su-30 fighters. The coordinated maneuvers raised alarms in Tokyo over the deepening military collaboration between Russia and China.
Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi remarked that the joint operations were “clearly aimed at demonstrating force against Japan.” He emphasized that these maneuvers were a significant concern for national security. In response, Japan's Air Self-Defense Force adhered strictly to air defense identification protocols to monitor and engage with the aircraft.
Reports from Russian news agencies indicated that the joint operation near Japan persisted for nearly eight hours.
Similarly, South Korea reported that on the same day, seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft entered its air defense identification zone without breaching South Korean airspace.
This incident follows a recent episode over the weekend, where Japan accused Chinese carrier-based jets of targeting radar at its military aircraft, claims that China has denied.
Relations between Japan and China have soured further since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently asserted that Japan would retaliate if China employed military force against Taiwan threatening Japan’s own security.
China and Russia have been enhancing their military ties, conducting joint anti-missile exercises on Russian territory and combined naval drills in the South China Sea, indicating a growing strategic partnership.
