In a recent statement, Coupang, the South Korean e-commerce leader, announced that all customer data compromised during a recent security breach has been erased. The company reported on Thursday that the individual responsible did not distribute the data externally.
Coupang revealed that a former employee accessed personal information of roughly 3,000 customers. The firm emphasized that this figure is minimal compared to its vast customer base of approximately 33 million. Following the incident, the ex-employee reportedly deleted the data and did not share it with others.
While Coupang has identified the former staff member in question, it withheld specific details. The individual has acknowledged involvement in the breach. Initially, Coupang’s CEO, Park Dae-jun, expressed remorse for the incident, describing it as a significant lapse in data protection.
Despite Coupang's assertions, South Korea’s Ministry of Science announced that the investigation is ongoing. The Ministry clarified that the claims made by Coupang have not been substantiated by governmental authorities. Officials raised concerns regarding the company’s decision to release information prematurely.
A collaborative investigation team, spearheaded by the science ministry and comprising private sector specialists, aims to uncover the extent of data accessibility, evaluate if the company's systems were vulnerable, and ascertain whether any laws were infringed upon.
This incident marks one of the most significant data security breaches in South Korea in recent history. Earlier this month, President Lee Jae Myung advocated for stricter penalties against Coupang, which operates in the U.S. market, should the company be found negligent.
The situation has ignited public concern over the security of personal data managed by large tech and retail firms. As online shopping habits expand, consumers expect their personal data to remain safeguarded. The investigation’s outcomes will be closely monitored and might instigate tighter regulations on data protection in South Korea.
