In a significant cyber incident just ahead of Christmas, France's postal service, La Poste, faced severe disruptions due to a major attack, affecting both package deliveries and online banking operations during the crucial holiday period.
On Wednesday, French prosecutors confirmed that the hacking group Noname057 claimed responsibility for the attack. This group is notorious for targeting Western entities perceived as allies of Ukraine. Following this revelation, the investigation has been handed over to France's domestic intelligence agency, DGSI, underscoring the incident's gravity.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, was executed through a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that incapacitated La Poste's central computer systems. Consequently, postal workers were unable to monitor parcel deliveries, and customers faced interruptions with online transactions and services from La Poste's banking arm. Company officials reported by Wednesday morning that full systems restoration had yet to be achieved.
The incident significantly impacted La Poste, which processes roughly 2.6 billion parcels per year and employs over 200,000 individuals nationwide. Given that this outage took place during the peak holiday season, millions of customers were affected by potential delays.
Authorities in France remarked that Noname057 has connections to multiple cyber incidents across Europe, notably around a NATO summit in the Netherlands and attacks on French governmental digital platforms. Earlier this year, the group was also targeted by a coordinated European law enforcement initiative.
This incident raises alarms in France and other European nations regarding what officials characterize as a campaign of “hybrid warfare” allegedly orchestrated by Russia. This includes various tactics such as cyber attacks, sabotage, misinformation, and other acts intended to undermine the West's support for Ukraine.
Data from Associated Press investigations reveal that over 145 similar incidents have been documented across Europe, increasingly straining the capacities of law enforcement and security entities.
The investigation into this cyberattack remains active, as French authorities seek to determine its full impact while enhancing protective measures for critical national infrastructure.
