Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport experienced significant flight disruptions on Wednesday due to thick fog blanketing the city. Approximately 78 arriving flights and 70 departures were cancelled, while two flights destined for Delhi were rerouted to alternate airports.
Domestic airline IndiGo issued a travel advisory alerting passengers to potential delays extending into the afternoon, attributing the disruptions to poor visibility across Delhi and several airports in northern India. Flights operated by IndiGo to Pantnagar and Dehradun were also cancelled because of the foggy conditions.
The airline assured travelers that departures and arrivals were being coordinated carefully to maintain orderly movement and passenger comfort. IndiGo staff were stationed at key points within the airport to provide assistance as needed.
By early afternoon, visibility at the airport improved, allowing flight operations to proceed more smoothly. The airport’s official advisory encouraged passengers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for updated flight information and confirmed that ground personnel were actively assisting passengers throughout all terminals.
Because of the dense fog, flights were managed under CAT III instrument landing system procedures, which can lead to delays and cancellations. The airport apologized for the inconvenience caused and reassured travelers of ongoing support during these difficult weather conditions.
Earlier in the morning, heavy fog enveloped Delhi and surrounding parts of the National Capital Region, drastically lowering visibility and disrupting traffic flow and daily activities in several key areas.
As the day went on, visibility improved steadily, contributing to the stabilization of flight operations at one of India's busiest airports.
