As New Year’s Eve approaches, Delhi Police have launched a massive security operation across South and South East Delhi, resulting in the arrest of over 660 accused individuals in an overnight crackdown aimed at preventing crime during the festive period.
The coordinated action, conducted under the banner of Operation Aaghat 3.0, involved intense searches carried out in vulnerable neighborhoods over a span of 24 hours. The police targeted habitual offenders, drug peddlers, bootleggers, gamblers, and other troublemakers to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration for residents.
According to police officials, the South East district alone accounted for 285 arrests, while the combined efforts in South and South East Delhi districts saw the detention of more than 850 persons. A total of over 2,800 individuals were questioned during the operation, which was described as a "very successful drive" by senior police authorities.
The police seized a significant number of illegal items during the raids. These included 24 country-made pistols and 44 knives, reflecting the drive’s focus on cracking down on arms-related offences. Over 22,500 quarters of illicit liquor were confiscated, and more than 60 people were arrested in connection with these seizures.
In addition, the police arrested 10 individuals over the possession of approximately 10 kilograms of ganja (cannabis), as part of their anti-drug efforts. The crackdown also uncovered gambling operations, resulting in 68 gamblers being taken into custody and the recovery of Rs 2.3 lakh in cash.
Vehicle theft networks were another key target during the drive. Five suspected auto-lifters were arrested, and 231 two-wheelers along with one four-wheeler were seized, aiming to reduce the risk of vehicle thefts during the busy holiday season.
The operation placed special emphasis on organized crime and habitual offenders. Police identified about 155 “bad characters” — known for repeat offenses — and brought them into custody to disrupt ongoing criminal activities. In addition, 10 property offenders were arrested, further highlighting the wide-ranging scope of the crackdown.
Senior police officials said the campaign sent a strong message to criminals and those involved in street crimes, emphasizing that law enforcement will take strict action to maintain public safety during the festivities.
The police registered 66 cases under the Arms Act related to illegal possession of weapons and made an equal number of arrests under this law. Besides, cases were also filed under the Excise Act for illicit liquor, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for drug-related offenses, and the Gambling Act for unlawful betting activities.
More than 350 people were arrested for consuming liquor in public places, an act prohibited under local laws, to ensure that public spaces remain safe and orderly.
In a significant success, approximately 350 stolen or lost mobile phones were recovered during the operation. The police are now in the process of returning these devices to their rightful owners, providing relief to victims of theft.
The police have reassured the public that the drive will continue in the coming days to keep the city safe and secure during the New Year celebrations. Authorities urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activity to help maintain peace in the capital.
This comprehensive crackdown underscores Delhi Police’s commitment to combating crime and ensuring a peaceful environment for all residents and visitors during the festive season.
