Denmark has unequivocally conveyed its stance following a notable change in U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach towards Greenland. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that her country will not entertain discussions regarding its sovereignty, even as Washington moves towards fresh security dialogues in the Arctic region. Her comments stemmed from Trump easing previously aggressive tariff threats aimed at European nations and shifting his focus regarding Greenland.
In a statement made in Copenhagen, Frederiksen remarked that no agreements or frameworks currently exist that would alter the political status of Denmark or Greenland. She reiterated that while Denmark is open to discussions on security, investment, and cooperation, the question of sovereignty is off the table. Decisions concerning Greenland, as per her statement, ought to be made solely by Denmark in collaboration with Greenland, excluding any external influence.
Previously, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump asserted he would refrain from using force to obtain Greenland, despite his ongoing interest in the territory. He mentioned possible security arrangements pertaining to the Arctic that were reportedly discussed with NATO leadership. Meanwhile, Danish officials clarified that no agreements involving sovereignty had been reached.
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, is gaining increasing geopolitical significance due to its Arctic location. With climate change paving the way for new navigation routes and increased access to natural resources, global powers like the U.S., China, and Russia are steadily turning their attention towards the region. Denmark acknowledges the necessity for enhanced Arctic security and supports collaborative efforts among NATO allies on this front.
Frederiksen conveyed Denmark’s readiness to engage in Arctic defense dialogues, potentially linking to U.S. missile defense initiatives, contingent upon their respect for Denmark's territorial rights. She emphasized that Arctic security is a common NATO obligation that should be addressed through cooperative alliance efforts, rather than through coercion.
The Danish public has reacted with mixed feelings, with many casting doubt on Trump’s unexpected change in tone. Some citizens express a lack of trust in his statements and are concerned about possible future pressures on Greenland. Others argue that any decisions should always rest with the Greenlanders themselves rather than foreign powers.
Support for Denmark’s position has been echoed by European leaders. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz underscored the shared trans-Atlantic responsibility in safeguarding Denmark and Greenland, highlighting the importance of upholding sovereignty and borders. While he welcomed Trump’s moderated comments, he insisted that cooperation must adhere to international norms.
This situation underscores a broader discourse on power dynamics, security, and mutual respect among allies. As the Arctic’s significance grows on the global political stage, Denmark's message remains resolute. Cooperation is welcomed, but ownership and sovereignty are indisputable. For Copenhagen, Greenland stands as an essential part of the Danish kingdom, with its future entrusted solely to its citizens.
