Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced the release of the fifth Transactions Report from DEWA’s Research and Development (R&D) Centre. The report showcases significant progress, with the centre publishing 71 new research papers indexed in Scopus, bringing the total to 346 papers presented at international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
These research papers span a variety of cutting-edge fields such as solar energy technologies, smart grid systems, Fourth Industrial Revolution innovations, advanced materials, and energy systems. The R&D Centre has also reached an important milestone in innovation by registering 64 patents, with 18 patents already granted and the remaining applications under review. The centre’s dedicated team comprises 44 experts, including nine Ph.D. holders and nineteen professionals with Master’s degrees.
Al Tayer emphasized the role of DEWA’s R&D Centre in transforming Dubai into a global hub for scientific excellence and a knowledge-based economy. “Our goal is to attract top researchers worldwide and to leverage scientific advancements that improve water and energy management sustainably,” he said. “The centre’s work enhances DEWA’s operational performance and supports Dubai’s leadership in the global energy transition.”
Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, highlighted the importance of collaboration, noting partnerships with prestigious institutions such as the Fraunhofer Society, Stanford University, and the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM). These collaborations help strengthen DEWA’s innovation ecosystem and research capabilities.
Key topics featured in the latest report include enhancing the durability of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in extreme desert climates and developing next-generation PV cells, applying deep learning for energy consumption monitoring, and analyzing HVAC energy standards across the GCC. Other breakthroughs include grid demand flexibility, fault detection using microphase measurement units (μPMUs), automated underground utility mapping with robotics and sensors, advances in 3D printing technology, innovations in vanadium redox flow batteries, and DEWA’s proprietary GENOS energy optimization system designed to boost renewable energy resilience.
Through these achievements, DEWA’s R&D Centre continues to drive technological innovation that supports Dubai’s sustainable development goals and accelerates the adoption of renewable energy worldwide.
