Denmark and Greenland Urge U.S. Against Trump's Greenland Control

Denmark and Greenland Urge U.S. Against Trump's Greenland Control

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a robust diplomatic initiative, Denmark and Greenland have reached out to U.S. officials in a bid to counter former President Donald Trump’s recent insistence on acquiring Greenland, a key Arctic island.

Jesper Møller Sørensen, Denmark’s ambassador to the United States, along with Jacob Isbosethsen, Greenland’s envoy in Washington, engaged in discussions on Thursday with members of the White House National Security Council. Their conversations centered around Trump's latest remarks suggesting that the U.S. might pursue the acquisition of Greenland, even implying military options.

Danish officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, have confirmed the meeting, but the White House remained silent when asked for comments regarding these discussions.

Beyond their engagement with the White House, the Danish and Greenland representatives have been actively conversing with various U.S. lawmakers this week, aiming to galvanize opposition to any takeover plans regarding Greenland.

In related developments, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with Danish officials next week, and the Greenland issue is expected to be on the agenda.

As an autonomous territory of Denmark, Greenland's geographical location in the Arctic renders it of significant strategic importance.
