A heart-wrenching incident unfolded off the coast of Gambia, where a boat carrying over 200 migrants capsized, leaving many unaccounted for, as confirmed by the Defence Ministry on Friday. The disaster occurred on Wednesday when the vessel became stranded on a sandbank.
Rescue efforts have successfully saved 96 individuals, with the remains of seven victims also retrieved. Among the survivors, 10 are reported to be critically injured and are currently receiving urgent medical assistance.
This vessel was transporting migrants from various African nations. Each year, individuals from Gambia, Senegal, and surrounding West African countries undertake this treacherous journey toward the Canary Islands—part of Spain—aiming to access the opportunities that the European Union offers.
This tragic event underscores the severe risks that migrants face during hazardous sea crossings in their search for a better future. Authorities are intensifying their rescue operations and advocating for greater awareness and safer migration practices.
