A driver involved in a tragic crash in north London, which resulted in the death of a teenager just released from a Dubai prison, has accepted his culpability for the incident.
Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, 20, confessed in court on Friday to causing the death of 19-year-old Marcus Fakana through dangerous driving following a police chase that ended in a catastrophic collision in Tottenham. Huseen also acknowledged inflicting serious injuries on another passenger, in addition to driving without a valid licence or insurance.
The crash transpired in the early hours of October 3 of the previous year while Huseen was operating a BMW with two passengers onboard. Officers from the Metropolitan Police were attempting to halt what they described as a “vehicle of interest” on Pretoria Road, north London. Following a brief pursuit, officers momentarily lost sight of the vehicle.
Shortly thereafter, police discovered the crashed BMW had collided with a lorry in The Roundway area of Tottenham, resulting in severe damage.
Marcus Fakana, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Another passenger incurred serious injuries and required extensive medical care.
Huseen appeared via video link from HMP Pentonville during his hearing at Wood Green Crown Court, where he admitted his role in causing Fakana’s death through dangerous driving and the injuries to the second passenger. He further pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and a valid licence.
The case has garnered attention due to Fakana’s recent and widely publicized release from incarceration in Dubai.
Just three months prior to the crash, 19-year-old Fakana from Tottenham was liberated from a UAE prison, having served nearly a year behind bars. His troubles began during a family holiday in the UAE in the summer of 2024 when he became romantically involved with a 17-year-old girl from London.
His imprisonment raised significant concern and media interest in the UK until he was ultimately released following a royal pardon from Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His family had hoped that upon returning home, the teen would start anew.
However, his life was heartbreakingly cut short in a matter of moments on a London street.
During the court proceedings, prosecutors indicated that Huseen was trying to outrun police when the collision occurred. Although officers had momentarily lost visual contact with the BMW, they reached the accident scene shortly after to find the vehicle wrecked and its occupants in dire condition.
Following the hearing, Huseen was taken into custody. The court confirmed a future hearing date on February 27 to determine sentencing.
This tragic incident has reignited calls for more stringent measures against reckless driving and police pursuit-related accidents, especially in residential neighborhoods of London.
For Fakana’s family, this misfortune illustrates a heartbreaking conclusion to what had seemingly shifted toward hope. After surviving a year abroad in prison and finally returning home, his life was abruptly taken on a London street.
