Fireworks Thrown Into Drogheda Refugee Centre, Children Hospitalized

Fireworks Thrown Into Drogheda Refugee Centre, Children Hospitalized

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A shocking arson attack in Drogheda, County Louth, has left several children, including a baby, hospitalized after fireworks were thrown into a building housing people applying for international protection. The incident occurred late Friday evening, sending waves of fear through the local community and prompting a swift emergency response.

Around 8:15 pm local time, firefighters were alerted to a blaze at the accommodation centre. Gardaí (Irish police) arrived on the scene shortly afterward to assist with evacuation and to begin investigating the cause of the fire, which was quickly extinguished. Four children and one adult were taken to hospital for medical assessment, according to reports from RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster.

The building was promptly evacuated to ensure the safety of all residents. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan strongly condemned the attack, calling it a "criminal act" that endangered vulnerable lives. He emphasized the terror experienced by the women and children living at the facility, many of whom are seeking safety and protection.

“Fireworks were thrown into the building, causing a fire and putting lives at risk,” O’Callaghan said. “This was a terrifying ordeal for the women and children living there, a number of whom were taken to hospital.”

Authorities are now working to find alternative accommodation for those affected by the attack to ensure their continued safety and well-being. Meanwhile, Gardaí have secured the scene and are conducting a thorough technical examination to gather evidence and identify those responsible.

“A full Garda investigation into this arson attack is underway,” the police said in a statement. “There will be serious consequences for those responsible.”

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by individuals seeking asylum in Ireland and the importance of safeguarding their rights and safety. The community and officials alike are rallying to support the victims and call for justice.

The investigation continues as Gardaí urge anyone with information to come forward to aid in swiftly resolving this disturbing case.
