Empire Family Moves to UK to Beat Australia’s Under-16 Social Ban

Empire Family Moves to UK to Beat Australia’s Under-16 Social Ban

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Perth, Australia — The popular Australian Empire Family, known for their millions of online fans, are relocating to the United Kingdom to continue creating content after Australia’s new social media ban for under-16s takes effect this December.

The four-member family—mums Beck and Bec Lea, 17-year-old son Prezley, and 14-year-old daughter Charlotte—have built a massive online presence, sharing daily life, gaming videos, makeup tutorials, and family holidays on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Charlotte alone has nearly half a million YouTube followers, while Prezley’s channel boasts 2.8 million subscribers.

Australia’s world-first ban requires Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X, and YouTube to block users under 16 from creating accounts, with fines of up to A$50 million for non-compliance. The ban aims to protect children from the harmful effects of social media, though enforcement methods such as facial recognition, ID verification, and parental approval have raised concerns over privacy and accuracy.

In a video announcement, Beck Lea explained the family’s move is not in opposition to the ban, saying, “We understand that it is protecting young people from harm on the internet, but we use the internet for good.” Bec added that social media has evolved, and many young creators are using platforms positively.

Charlotte’s recent decision to switch to online schooling and the family’s dual British-Australian citizenship made the move feasible. Relocating to the UK will allow Charlotte to continue her online activities without restrictions while maintaining family life and content creation.

The Empire Family’s decision highlights the challenges young content creators face under stricter online regulations and underscores the global impact of social media policies on families who rely on digital platforms for work, education, and connection.
