Efforts to empower women must go beyond just conversations and turn into real actions, such as corporate commitments and partnerships with governments.
Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the wife of Malaysia’s Prime Minister, called on leaders, business owners, and policymakers to work together for inclusive growth through shared leadership and international collaboration.

“It’s a true honor to be here with such remarkable women. Your vision, generosity, and dedication to making a difference are not only admirable but also a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together,” she said while delivering her keynote speech at the Women's Economic Forum (WEF) ASEAN 2025.

The forum, held today, also saw the presence of Deputy Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong; Deputy Minister for Women, Family, and Community Development Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad; WEF ASEAN 2025 Organizing Chairperson Datin Dr Hartini Osman; and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

Dr Wan Azizah highlighted that the WEF works from a global perspective while remaining true to its mission as a non-profit movement. She called the movement “Sheconomy,” which reflects the growing influence of women in shaping economic conversations. Dr Wan Azizah expressed hope that the forum would drive real change.

The Prime Minister’s wife also pointed out the potential dangers of technological advancements, especially if not carefully managed. She warned that without proper oversight, new technologies could harm meaningful relationships, particularly for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. She emphasized the need to consider the social impact of technology to prevent isolation and abuse.

Dr Wan Azizah also stressed the importance of work-life balance, noting that while society encourages more women to join the workforce, caregiving must also be recognized as a shared responsibility.

“It may not always be a 50-50 split, but it depends on mutual understanding, the strengths, and capabilities of both parents. Unpaid care work, home management, and emotional support are vital to the economy, but these are not easily quantified. We can’t put a price on that,” she said.

Reflecting on her own experiences as a mother and wife, she reminded the audience not to overlook the emotional cost of balancing career and family life.

“Sometimes we forget about the responsibility of caring for our families. Let us commit to building a world where gender no longer holds anyone back, and where everyone can reach their full potential. Every woman deserves the chance to shine,” she said.

The forum’s theme, “Women Leaders Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of the ASEAN Sheconomy,” celebrated the key role of women in driving global economic growth. Focusing on cross-border collaboration, leadership, and innovation, the event showcased women-led success stories and strategies for sustainable development.

WEF ASEAN 2025 brought together influential women leaders from across the region and beyond, offering participants the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, create powerful networks, and explore new opportunities for women to influence the future of the global economy.
